our history
LATE 1800s
The Orini area was predominantly swampland, with flax milling a major local industry. Extensive wetlands supported flax mills, helping drive economic activity and settlement throughout the district.
1910s – 1930s
The Hansen family settled in Orini, establishing agricultural operations, founding a successful apiary business, and contributing to the growth of the local community.
1940s
As the district continued to develop, local businesses and agricultural industries expanded, laying the foundations for industrial growth in Orini.
1950s – 1960s
The Orini sawmill expanded significantly under the Hansen family, growing from a small operation into a major industrial site. Timber was sourced from the Maramarua Forest.
1970s – 1980s
The mill continued to grow and modernise, becoming a well-established timber processing operation and an important employer within the district.
1990s – 2000s
The business underwent several ownership and management transitions, operating under names including Orini Lumber before eventually becoming NZ Timber.
2010s – Present
Following the Bidois family's purchase of the site in 2011, NZ Timber has expanded its facilities, processing capabilities, and digital presence while continuing the site's timber legacy.
